Omaha is a recreational playground for anyone who is willing to take the time to truly play. An Omaha RV rental is one of the most economical ways to enjoy a family vacation, and to further the savings, there are a myriad of things you can do that don’t cost any money at all. Here are a few ideas of places to go and things to do in the Omaha area:
Standing Bear Lake Park:
This park offers water sports such as fishing and boating, as well as hiking trails and picnic areas. The park is named after Chief Standing Bear, who was told to gather his people of the Ponca Tribe and leave his homeland and head for Indian Territory in Oklahoma. There were no supplies there, and, when his people (including his own son) started dying off, he was forced to return to Nebraska where he fought to remain and be recognized as a human being. He proclaimed to the people “I am a man. The same God made us both.” The park is a short, 20-minute drive into West Omaha. Just follow US 6 W for 11 miles.
Tank Down the Elkhorn River:
For a relaxing treat and a cool down experience, pull your family out of the RV and into the tank! Tanking is a tradition that started in the Sandhills of Nebraska, and has now caught on in the Elkhorn River. These 8-foot diameter stock tanks are equipped with picnic tables inside each one, and will hold four people per tank. They have a great deal of stability in the water, and you don’t even need to paddle. All you need to worry about is sitting back and letting the current take you to the end. To get there, travel west on US-6 W 17.5 miles from downtown Omaha. There is also RV camping available right there at Riverwest Park, where the tanking journey begins.
Eugene T. Mehoney State Park:
This park is a great place to park your motorhome and just let loose. There are several pretty places to station your Cruise America rental RV. It is located off I-80 at exit 426. It sits on the scenic Platt River on 690 acres. It is open all year, and staying in the park is conducive to any kind of weather. The recreational activities seem endless. There is even a family aquatic center that includes a 0-depth swimming and wave pool, as well as two 200-plus-foot curling water slides. All together there are 3 water slides, a wave pool, and a lap pool. Other activities for your family include tennis, basketball, softball, horseback riding, miniature golf, driving range, crafts, fishing, and picnicking. There are hiking and biking trails, a nature conservatory, and even a theater with live shows and performances. Your family will enjoy this park for days, and then it’s off to your next Oklahoma recreational vehicle adventure!
