Located in the middle of the northern part of New Jersey, Liberty State Park is one of the most dramatic parks in the entire state, offering 1,212 acres of good times. There is a variety of recreational activities, including paths for walking, jogging, biking, rollerblading, bird watching, picnic sites, fishing, and boating or kayaking. At the north end of the park you’ll find the historic Central Railroad of New Jersey (CRRNJ) Terminal; a great reminder of Jersey’s transportation history in the northeast. There is a two-mile promenade called Liberty Walk. It links the picnic area, the Interpretive Center and the CRRNJ Terminal with one another, all while offering a spectacular view of the Hudson River. In the northern sections of the park, visitors will find the outdoor performance area, along with several other attractions. The western portion of the park is where the state-of-the-art Liberty Science Center is located. Liberty State Park is the only location in New Jersey that offers ferry service to Ellis Island and the Statue of Liberty. The park is open from 6:00 a.m. to 10:00 p.m., and the park office (closed on Thanksgiving, Christmas and New Year’s Day) is open from 8:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. The address of the park is 1 Audrey Zapp Drive Jersey City, NJ 07305 and the phone number is (201) 915-3403. Wharton State Forest
Known as the perfect spot for travelers, the Wharton State Forest is part of the famous Pine Barrens (Pinelands National Reserve) 1.1 million-acre nature preserve. It is the largest state forest in the state of New Jersey, and the largest single tract of land in the state’s park system, boasting 115,000 acres of the Pinelands northeast of Hammonton. Throughout the park, you’ll find rivers and streams for canoeing, hiking trails and miles of unpaved roads for mountain biking and horseback riding. In addition, there are numerous lakes, ponds and fields, making for great wildlife watching. The park is open from sunrise to sunset. It’s a two-hour trip from Newark via the New Jersey Turnpike and the US 206, but well worth the drive.
