One of the most interesting things to do while traveling within the Prairie State is to roll along the old Route 66 Highway. This historical auto trail provides a great travel itinerary in and of itself. Here is just a sampling of things to see and do while cruising this oh-so-famous stretch of highway in your motorhome rental from Cruise America:

Day 1 – You can start your day by preparing breakfast in the kitchen of your Cruise America class C RV. However, if that idea doesn’t strike your fancy, you can eat in one of the many great breakfast spots Chicago has to offer, like Lou Mitchell’s, located in the downtown area. It must be really good, as they have been in business since 1923. You can then head over to what is considered the official start of Route 66 on Jackson Boulevard at Lake Shore Drive. Inside the Joliet Area Historical Museum you will find the Route 66 Welcome Center. Perhaps while there you can catch a play or concert at Joliet’s Rialto Square Theatre. Then, after exploring the beautiful nightlife that Chicago has to offer, you can make your way back to the comfort of your Cruise America RV for a good night’s rest.

Day 2 – You can pilot your motorhome to the famous Gemini Giant, the well-known statue of a giant spaceman, which stands 28 feet tall in front of the launching pad drive-in. Keep the RV rolling to the historic and well-preserved Odell Station in, where else, Odell. Built in 1932, this charming old gas station served travelers on Route 66 until it stopped selling gas in the mid 1960s. This old station has become a landmark to many that travel this famous stretch of highway. While it no longer sells gas, it is the home to many automobile rallies and motorcycle tours. As you roll your rental RV into Pontiac, you can visit the Route 66 Association Hall of Fame and Museum. There you will find one of the world’s most complete displays of classic Pontiac and Oakland automobiles. There are also artifacts from dealers, as well as over 2000 antique oilcans. As long as you’re there, you may as well have some old-fashioned comfort food at the Old Log Cabin (that is, unless you choose to cook in the kitchen of your motorhome). Oh, and why not stop at Funks Grove Pure Maple Sirup (yep, they really spell it that way) for some freshly harvested maple goodness?

Day 3 – Continuing on your Route 66 “roll,” you can motorhome right into the town of Springfield and visit Bill Shea’s Gas Station Museum. He has been in business along the famous route for over 50 years, and most likely has seen it all. After a hardy lunch at the Ariston Café, complete with its 1920s furnishings, you can “hop” on over to Henry’s Rabbit Ranch in Staunton, where you will find both bunnies and Volkswagens, along with a myriad of interesting things to see. You may want to end your adventure by visiting the old Chain of Rocks Bridge in Madison. This bridge spans the Mississippi River and separates Missouri from Illinois. It is now the largest pedestrian bridge in the world.
