Busch Gardens Africa, Tampa, FL
Is it a zoo? A theme park? A wet-and-wild water park? At Busch Gardens Africa, it’s all three and so much more. Located in Tampa, about an hour south of the amusement park madness of Orlando, Busch Gardens Africa feels like a whole new world. Unique amongst all the Florida amusement parks, the park first opened its doors in 1959 as a free attraction next to the Anheuser-Busch Brewery. Today it’s got everything: family safari rides on the Serengeti Plain, wild roller coasters full of loops and drop-offs, and even Adventure Island, a 30-acre water park next door. If you go, don’t miss SheiKra, Busch Gardens’ newest roller coaster. With a 138-foot drop at a 90-degree angle, it’s unlike anything you’ve seen at other Florida amusement parks.
Six Flags Over Texas, Arlington, TX
They say everything’s bigger in Texas, and Texas amusement parks are no exception. At Six Flags Over Texas, you’ll have everything Six Flags is known for - pulse-pounding roller coasters, kid-friendly fun, and everything in between. But for a true taste of the Lone Star State, you’ve got to ride the Texas Giant. At 14 stories tall, this old-school monster is consistently voted the best wooden coaster on earth. But don’t worry; unlike the rickety wooden coasters at other parks, this one was built less than two decades ago. Of all the Texas amusement parks, Six Flags Over Texas is one you don’t want to miss.
Cedar Point Amusement Park, Sandusky, OH
Boasting more roller coasters and rides than any other amusement park in the world, Cedar Point is a thrill-seeker’s dream and one of the most well-known amusement parks in the United States. Come for the amusement park’s newest addition, Maverick - a Frontier-themed coaster that drops riders from 100 feet in the air at an astonishing 95-degree angle, meaning it’s even steeper than a straight drop-off. With 17 roller coasters and around 70 total rides, there’s amusement park fun for every member of the family here.
