Once you have seen the nation`s capital, you may wish to venture out to nearby communities such as Colonial Williamsburg. Just an hour-and-a-half south on I-95 will get you to this historical destination. Once there, you can step back in time and participate in life as they knew it during the revolutionary days, and experience firsthand the struggles of wartime. You will walk the streets and meet the trades people and shopkeepers who will explain all about their responsibilities, and how they are performed. Their mode of dress is apropos to the period, and they do not leave their characters’ persona for anything!
You will be able to take part as colonists make the all-important choice of whether to stay in the mother country or fight for a free and independent nation. There is also revolutionary fun for the kids, as they not only learn about the Revolutionary war, they can also play colonial games at the Benjamin Powell House, and see how life for a child was during that period.
Be sure to swing into the Anderson`s blacksmith shop and public armory, the Governor`s Palace, the R. Charlton`s Coffeehouse and the Capitol. The majority of the attractions of Colonial Williamsburg is open 365-days-per-year from 9:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m., although there are some sites that are open later. Other area attractions nearby are Busch Gardens, Water Country USA, Jamestown Settlement and Yorktown Victory Center.
Ocean City, Maryland is a great daytrip from the Washington DC area. There, you will find 10 miles of white-sand beaches along the Oceanside. This is one of the most popular family vacation spots in the whole region. This great beach town features the 3-mile Ocean City Boardwalk, along with amusement parks, arcades, miniature golf, great outlet shopping, movie theaters and even a go-cart racetrack.
There are plenty of great RV parks in the area where you can station your Cruise America RV rental for the night. To get there from the nation`s capital, get on the Capital Beltway (from Virginia, I-95/495 north). From the Capital Beltway, take Exit 19A, U.S. 50 east toward Annapolis and follow U.S. 50 east across the Bay Bridge and straight into Ocean City.
These are only a few suggestions of hundreds of places you can go around the Germantown area—the rest is up to your imagination.
