It is the oldest lighthouse in New York, commissioned by President George Washington in 1792. You can take a walk through Montauk Point State Park and do some seal watching in the winter, or you can kayak, surf, or do some beachcombing during the summer. When the water is calm, you can enjoy the unique view of the converging tides from the Atlantic and Block Island Sound, which seem to be racing each other. From Montauk, you can make your way to Hither Hills State Park, where there are 168 oceanfront campsites to choose from. To get there, just travel four miles southwest along SR 27. Turn left onto Napeague Harbor Road and you have arrived. What a great place to park your Cruise America rental motorhome! You can sleep to the sound of the waves crashing into the sandy beaches. Every campsite is complete with platforms and picnic tables. Also, there are four bathroom facilities throughout the park. While there, you can visit the unusual "walking dunes" of Napeague Harbor. They are located on the eastern boundary of the park. The dunes make for an easy, enjoyable hike along the sandy beach, shaded beneath a canopy of beach plumb trees, oaks, and pitch pine. The park is open year-round, and the beach is open from Memorial Day to Labor day.
