If you're planning an RV trip in the Keystone State, Harrisburg would be a great starting point. You can get one of our Cruise America Harrisburg (Carlisle) RV rentals from our conveniently located Carlisle rental center just twenty minutes out of Harrisburg.
Harrisburg has played a major role in the creation of our American history. It was an integral link in the development of both rail and water transportation. It was also the stage for many of the battles that took place in the Civil War. This lively center of family activities offers all kinds of fun things to do while traveling in your Cruise America rental RV.
To get a taste of the history that formed our nation, you could visit the first building that belonged to the citizens of the commonwealth, the Pennsylvania Capitol Building. This is the state's most visited attraction, as it is an architectural wonder, as well as an iconic symbol of history, freedom and democracy. When President Theodor Roosevelt (attending the dedication of the capitol) first viewed the spectacular edifice, he exclaimed, "This is the handsomest building I ever saw." The building is located at 501 N 3rd St in Harrisburg. The hours of operation are from 7AM to 6PM daily. There are no tours offered Christmas Eve, Christmas, New Year’s Eve, and New Year’s Day. Tours must be scheduled ahead of time, by calling 1-800-868-7672.
You and your family could hop out of your rental RV and into one of the last authentic stern-driven paddle wheelers in existence. The Pride of the Susquehanna offers riverboat cruises along the Susquehanna River. Since it was created in 1988, it has carried nearly a million passengers on the daily 45-minute sightseeing cruises. To call about a cruise, you can call 717-234-6500.
If you want to venture out of Harrisburg to some of the surrounding towns, a very sweet start would be to visit the Hershey Chocolate World in no other than Hershey, PA. From Harrisburg it is just a 20-minute trek in your motorhome via US 422E/Benjamin Franklin Hwy. Here at the world famous (and certainly historical) chocolate factory, you can tour the facility and watch the magical transformation that takes place as cocoa beans become milk chocolate! Not only can you see it, you can taste it, smell it and feel it. It will create sweet memories that will last a lifetime. Oh, and the tour includes a free sample of the goods! While you are there, you can park your Cruise America RV at the Hersheypark Camping Resort. Hours of operation for the tours vary throughout the year, so it would be a good idea to call ahead at 717-534-4900.
Some other areas of interest in the Harrisburg area are the Ricketts Glen State Park in Benton, PA, the Harley-Davidson factory in York, PA and the Gettysburg National Military Park in Gettysburg, PA. These are just a few of the hundreds of points of interest in the area.
Wherever your travels take you in the Harrisburg area, you can be assured that you will enjoy the convenience and comfort of traveling in a Cruise America rental RV.
