On your next trip through the Lone Star State, take along the comforts of home in one of the Dallas RV rentals from Cruise America's Kennedale rental center. Get your thrills at the high-energy theme park Six Flags Over Dallas. Enjoy the city’s famous barbecue and authentic Mexican and Tex-Mex cuisine. Relax or work out at one of the city’s many scenic parks or lakes. Delve into Texan culture at the Arts District, where performing and visual arts reign supreme.
Just an hour out of Dallas, traveling east on I-80 and I-20 is the delightful town of Canton. This is the home of what has become known as the “First Monday Trade Days,” the nation's oldest and largest flea market. The market is open Thursday through Sunday before the first Monday of each month … rain or shine. This event draws up to a half-million people every time it takes place. It is home to some of the most incredible, cutting-edge home furnishings, antiques, and collectibles. The down-home relationship between the vendors and the shoppers keeps people coming back for more. There is something for everyone in the family, and you can chat with collectors, antique dealers, artisans, and craftsmen who create the beautiful, one-of-a-kind items you will see. You will most likely make several purchases while there, but that's okay, as there is a great deal of cargo space in each of our Cruise America RVs. And regarding RVs, there is RV parking with full hookups on the First Monday grounds. While in Canton, you may also want to visit the Twin Lakes Golf Course, the Splash Kingdom Waterpark, the Yesterland Farm, the Wired Zip Line Challenge, the Texas Roads Winery & Roadhouse, and Mary's Antiques. Be sure to call the attractions you want to visit to ensure their hours of operation, as they vary.
Another excursion you may wish to take from Dallas is a journey to Austin. It is a three-hour trip (not to be confused with the Gilligan's Island tour) up I-35 South, but well worth it. Besides, in a Cruise America class C recreational vehicle, the journey is as relaxing and enjoyable as the destination! If you happen to get to Austin in the spring (usually in March, but dates vary), you may be able to attend the South by Southwest Music/Film Festival. Each year, hipsters, groupies, and devoted fans flock to this event, which has catapulted the Texas city up the must-visit charts for millions of travelers. It is the largest festival in the world, with more than 2,200 performers and bands playing in over 100 venues.
The sandstone Capitol building in Austin is a must-see. It is symbolic of the Texas mentality that "bigger is better." It features a beautiful, whispering gallery rotunda sitting on the 22-acre grounds. If you are in the mood for some great outdoor activity and the weather is warm, visit Barton Springs, an enormous natural limestone pool fed by underground springs. It has been around for 200 years and provides refreshing entertainment for the whole family. It is set in a green, grassy, tree-lined field in Zilker Park, where Barton Creek flows. The natural springs at the bottom of the pool's center pump out an unbelievable 27,000,000 gallons a day, and the water is always a constant temperature…cold!
