Roll Through the Florida Keys

One of the most coveted places to live and play is located beyond the south end of the state. It’s a chain of small islands known as “keys,” and it’s connected to the mainland by an overseas highway known as U.S. Highway 1. This stretch of roadway links all the Florida Keys together, and stretches 127.5 miles into the Gulf of Mexico. One of the sections of this highway is a bridge that spans more than seven miles, hence, the name Seven Mile Bridge! This bridge has been featured in movies such as True Lies, Too Fast Too Furious and Mission Impossible III.

The most distant, and most popular key is Key West. This quaint island is known as the southernmost city in the continental U.S. In fact, it used to be the largest town in Florida! It gained its wealth from treasures harvested from shipwrecks. Because of improved navigation over time, the shipwrecks slowed way down and Key West declined. Take heart, though, as the island is once again hopping. Over a million tourists visit Key West each year. Some of the attractions of the town are Ernest Hemingway’s former residence, as well as the Southernmost Point, the Lighthouse and whole lot of drinking establishments … like Jimmy Buffet’s Margaritaville Restaurant / Hotel.

One of the top suggestions for RVers is that they book their campsite well in advance. Try to arrange where you want to park your Cruise America rental RV months ahead of time. There are several places to camp, but most of them are a bit pricier than the state parks, although they’re all great places to stay. Many of these parks have marinas so that if you have your own boat, you’re good to go.

Once you’re in Key West, you’ll find a multitude of things to do, from snorkeling, to fishing, to all kinds of watersports. After you watch an incredible sunset from the southernmost point in the nation, the nightlife starts to roll into gear, and the party atmosphere never ends until the sun rises again. One of the best parties to attend is the “lying back outside your motorhome and watching the stars above” party. The crystal-clear skies provide a beautiful light show each night.

No matter where you travel in your Cruise America motorhome, you’re bound to have an amazing time, and will definitely create memories that last a lifetime.
