The U.S. National Whitewater Center (USNWC) is the nation's premier outdoor adventure experience, as well as the environmental education of a lifetime. This is virtually a giant playground for humans! It is the home of the world's largest man-made whitewater river, upon which you can go whitewater rafting and kayaking. You can also go flat-water kayaking, mountain biking, rock climbing, zip lining, take a canopy tour and participate in team building exercises on rope courses. The goal of the USNWC is to provide a unique place that allows people to escape the daily grind of life and spend some time outdoors. This is the perfect destination for the RV traveler who is visiting the Charlotte area. With more than 24 activities, this is also the perfect place for kids and grownups alike to play. The main gate and hiking trails are open 365-days-a-year (weather permitting). The activity schedule varies, depending on the weather, so check with them before you buy an activity pass. From downtown Charlotte, head west on Moorhead Street, turn right onto Freedom Drive, take I-85 South (left entrance) and then take exit 29 for Sam Wilson Road and follow the signs for USNWC.

Crowders Mountain State Park is located in King's Mountain, just a few miles from Charlotte. It is located high atop Crowders Mountain, the second highest point in all of Gaston County. From atop this beautiful mountain, you will be able to see 25 miles of scenery in all directions. This is a hiker's paradise, where you will see vegetation that reaches to the sky, and cliffs that drop down into oblivion. You can park your Cruise America motorhome and walk any of the many miles of hiking trails. You will dip down into the valleys, cross over foothills and climb to the top of the peaks. The entire area is blanketed with tranquil woods, babbling streams and nothing but the sounds of nature calling out. The park office is open from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. daily (closed Christmas Day), but the hours for the actual park vary, so be sure to check before making your plans to visit. There are no entrance fees. This family-friendly park is located just 40 minutes from Charlotte. Take I-85 South toward Gastonia. Take exit 10A to merge onto the US-74. Turn right onto Sparrow Springs Rd, then take the first right onto State Park Lane.

Carowinds Amusement Park is located 15 minutes from uptown Charlotte at exit 90 (Carowinds Blvd) off Interstate 77 at the North Carolina/South Carolina border. There are 13 world-class roller coasters, including "The Intimidator," which is the tallest and longest coaster in the southeast. For the younger travelers there is the 12-acre children's play area called Planet Snoopy. There is also Boomerang Bay, a 20-acre water park that is Australian themed. This water park is included with the price of admission. There is the brand new Dinosaurs Alive park featuring 32 moving lifelike replicas of real dinosaurs covering 5 acres of woods. There are special celebrations all summer long. The park’s operating hours vary greatly throughout the year, so be sure to check their schedule before making plans to visit.
