8 Best Places To Camp in the Midwest

The Midwest is full of amazing RV campgrounds and state parks to explore. You just have to know where to look! Here are eight Midwest campgrounds to check out as you plan your road trip.

1. Robidoux RV Park - Gering, Nebraska

Another hidden gem as far as Midwest campgrounds go, Robidoux is nestled right at the base of Scotts Bluff National Monument. This striking natural landmark towers 800 feet above the North Platte River, providing a beautiful backdrop and endless recreation opportunities.

The RV park offers level campsites with picnic tables and cable TV, community BBQ grills, a playground, basketball courts, and a large multi-purpose room ideal for special events. Best of all, the sites have views of Scotts Bluff.

2. Geneseo Campground - Geneseo, Illinois

This tranquil location is far removed from any hustle and bustle but still just a hop, skip, and a jump away from big cities, including Cedar Rapids, Chicago, and Milwaukee. Geneseo is one of the best Midwest campgrounds.

Outdoor lovers will enjoy everything from fishing and kayaking in the historic Hennepin Canal to hiking and biking. There’s also excellent antique shopping nearby when you want to venture out. RVs, including big rigs, are welcome here, and with its camp store and proximity to I-80, it doesn’t get much more convenient.

3. Shipshewana North Park Campground - Shipshewana, Indiana

Shipshewana North Park Campground.
We all need to slow down occasionally, and this is one of the best Midwest campgrounds to do so. Nestled in northern Indiana’s Amish Country, this is a wonderful place to enjoy the scenic, slow-paced countryside and make family memories. Book an authentic buggy tour or explore the largest flea market in the Midwest, then head back to camp to unwind.

Onsite, the pet-friendly campground has Wi-Fi, a game room, and, best of all, the famous old-fashioned custard stand!

4. Adventureland Resort Campground - Altoona, Iowa

If you’re looking for some family-friendly adventure, this park has some of the best camping in the Midwest! Situated on the grounds of one of Iowa’s most popular attractions, Adventureland theme park, the campground has an ideal location and loads of amenities.

Relax by the pool, let the little ones run wild in the playground, and bring Fido to take advantage of the dog park. The campground also has modern shower and laundry facilities, and even dedicated van sites.

5. Gunsmoke RV Park - Dodge City, Kansas

The original Wild West town, there’s a ton to see in Dodge City. Experience historical attractions nearby, including gunfight reenactments and the infamous Fort Dodge, then come back to Kansas’ #1 rated campground and relax for the evening.

Gunsmoke has Wi-Fi, a pool and hot tub, a video game lounge, an ice cream parlor, and a general store. Keep your eyes open for a shoe partially buried in the ground — legend holds that it belongs to Chester Goode himself, who was killed here in a gunfight!

6. Tahquamenon Falls State Park - Paradise, Michigan

A summertime paradise, Michigan’s Upper Peninsula offers endless outdoor recreation and breathtaking scenery. Needless to say, it’s one of the best places to camp in the Midwest!

There are a variety of RV-friendly sites at this state park, all with 30-amp or 50-amp hookups and access to showers: Hemlock Loop and Portage campground, along the river, in Lower Falls Modern Campground, are the best. Access over 40 miles of hiking and biking trails, plus 13 inland lakes and the spectacular Upper and Lower Falls right from camp.

7. Ozark Mountain Springs RV Park - Mountain View, Missouri

Ozark Mountain Springs RV Park.
Many people don’t think of Missouri when they think of the mountains, but that’s exactly what makes this one of the best places to camp in the Midwest. Enjoy all the impressive Ozarks region has to offer, including Lake of the Ozarks, the Mark Twain National Forest, and countless caves.

At the RV park, the shaded, level, big rig-friendly sites feature full hookups and Wi-Fi. There’s also a state-of-the-art clubhouse and large facilities to accommodate meetings, rallies, or other events.

8. Berlin RV Park & Campground - Millersburg, Ohio

Tucked into north-central Ohio’s famed Amish country, you’ll find one of the most scenic Midwest campgrounds. Berlin RV Park features spacious sites with full hookups and Wi-Fi and a truly unique feature: being able to watch horses and buggies pass by! The park also has a playground, activity pavilion, and an herb garden guests are welcome to use.

Downtown Berlin, with some of the best furniture and antiques shopping in the country, is less than 10 minutes away.
