Best Summer Stargazing Destinations

Summer isn’t just about sand and sun. Take the road less traveled with these top stargazing sites for your next road trip.
Best Summer Stargazing Destinations
There’s no greater joy in summer than parking your RV rental in a secluded, dark sky site to sit under the stars and soak in the sounds of nature. Whether you’re an expert astronomer or novice stargazer, these are some of the top stargazing destinations to visit this summer.

Cosmic Campground

Labeled an International Dark Sky Sanctuary, the Cosmic Campground in New Mexico boasts the clearest skies in the Southwest. With a 360-degree, unobstructed view of the starry sky, visitors travel from near and far to catch a glimpse of these views. It is important to note that RV campsites are on a first-come, first-served basis and feature extremely limited amenities; a self-sufficient RV rental is recommended for this site.

Craters of the Moon National Monument

Named after a celestial body, it’s only fitting that this Dark Sky Park in Idaho make the list of top stargazing destinations to visit this summer. Park rangers take visitors on full moon hikes during the summer months and Craters of the Moon National Monument’s onsite campgrounds also make for leisurely viewing from your RV. You’ll want to make sure to turn off any lights and avoid having a campfire to reap the best views.

Big Bend National Park

You know how the song goes: “The stars at night are big and bright, deep in the heart of Texas.” Big Bend National Park is no exception. Already a naturally low light region due to minimal population in the area, the park is working to eliminate as much light emission as possible. If you’re looking to experience the Milky Way in all of its glory, then this summer stargazing destination is for you.

Grand Canyon National Park

Every summer, visitors have the opportunity to take a night sky tour on the North and South Rims of the Grand Canyon National Park in Arizona. The Tucson Amateur Astronomy Association and the Saguaro Astronomy Club of Phoenix donate their time to give free, nightly tours and telescope viewings. Dubbed the Star Party, you’ll have the chance to get an up-close look at planets like Saturn, Mercury, Jupiter and Mars. If you want to learn more about how to capture the beauty in a photo, guests can even take a night sky photography workshop. While the event is free, you’ll want to make sure you make a campsite reservation in advance.

Rainbow Bridge National Monument

Rainbow Bridge National Monument in Utah recently received status as an International Dark Sky Sanctuary, making it a pristine stargazing destination to visit this summer. Still recognized by many as sacred ground, this bridge is one of the tallest and longest natural bridges in the world. We recommend traveling by boat to get to this destination at night. Camping is available nearby at Glen Canyon National Recreation Area, so you won’t have to travel far after a night of stargazing.
