Start your New York travels in one of our Poughkeepsie RV rentals and experience a world of excitement! This community sits on the banks of the Hudson River, and offers several attractions for the RVer. Nearby Vassar College, as well as the Culinary Institute of America are two of the reasons Poughkeepsie offers such fine dining and fun boutiques. For a shopping adventure, visit Main Mall Row. It's a group of 1879 time period storefronts (Renaissance Revival style) along Main Street. It's on the National Register of Historic Places. In the area, there are 22 parks that give you the opportunity to take a break from the action and just relax. After all, isn't that what RV travel is all about? Oh, and there are plenty of nearby RV parks where you can station your motorhome.
If you'd like to venture out of the area for a daytrip, consider heading to:
Berkshires: Enjoy a concert in Tanglewood, summer home of the Boston Symphony Orchestra, and perhaps the prettiest art center in the nation. This was where the home of Nathaniel Hawthorne is located, which has now been reconstructed and serves as the practice studio for musicians. Even if you have no ticket to any of the musical performances, you can enjoy a stroll through the gorgeous gardens and manicured lawns. After your visit to Tanglewood, visit the Massachusetts Museum of Contemporary Art. Its 25 buildings were once home to the Sprague Electric Company. There are currently a quarter of a million square feet of museums, galleries, studios, cafes, theaters and performance centers. Afterwards, consider visiting the Hancock Shaker Village. Back in the 18th century, the Shakers of the area established a village known as the "City of Peace." Today the 1,200 hundred-acre farm and field is a spectacular exhibit of Shaker-made furniture and other household items, set in 20 different buildings. From Poughkeepsie, it's an hour and a half drive (83 miles) get to Berkshires by taking the Taconic State Parkway north for 46 miles, then merge onto I-90 E for 20 miles.
Pocono Mountains: Take a drive through the Delaware Water Gap National Recreation Area. It's 70,000 acres of beauty on both the New Jersey and the Pennsylvania sides of the Delaware River, and a great place to meander in your Cruise America rental RV. Many feel that the most beautiful part is where the 209 winds its way for 30 miles through the park. From the glimmering water of the river amidst the manicured farmland, to the smooth, black towering cliffs, you will find a world of beauty along the route. There are several great RV parks in the area, should you decide to set up for the night. To get to the Poconos from Poughkeepsie, Get on I-84 from U.S. 9 S and get off at exit 26 onto PA-390 S. Exit onto Pickerel Point Rd and you've made it!
