Begin your road-trip right here in Portland. This city is known for being one big giant recreational playground! There are perfectly placed campsites all over this city, where you can “set up shop.” Enjoy kayaking, hiking, horseback riding, waterfall watching and so much more. Then, when the sun starts to set, go back to your campsite and enjoy all of the luxuries of your (motor) home away from home. Spend the next day or two exploring this dreamland of a place. You may choose to visit the Oregon Zoo, the Portland Japanese Garden, the Grotto, Oaks Amusement Park or even some TAX FREE shopping! When you are ready to escape town, pack up the family and get ready to roll because Oregon is very well known for its amazing coastline drive.
We suggest starting this adventure by heading an hour and a half up US-26W, which will take you to the beautiful little city of Seaside. Sitting directly on the Pacific coast, seaside is the perfect pit stop on your route. Home to the Seaside Aquarium, your family can marvel at marine life, play in the Seaside Discovery Center and learn about regional species. All ages are guaranteed to have a great time and will walk away from the aquarium feeling more connected to nature. You can also opt to simply bask in the sunshine and the sand and soak up some vitamin D. Either way, you are sure to drive away from Seaside with nothing but a nice tan and a lasting memory that will leave you longing to come again.
Next, head directly south on Highway 101 and explore the ocean's edge on Rockaway Beach. This is where the mountains meet the coast. You will enjoy nature's playground here as you check out the local shops, eat some amazing food and discover the best place to park your RV for the night if you should choose to stay. Also, this breathtaking town was where the famous “Pronto Pup” was invented! So don’t forget to grab one on your way out!
Keep south on 101 for another 25 minutes and run into Bay City, where you can take a stroll down the Riverwalk Pier or explore the historical ships that occupy the Saginaw Valley Naval Ship Museum.
Your coastal adventure could climax with a final stop in Tillamook. SAY CHEESE! This is the home of the Tillamook brand. Take a tour of the cheese factory and sample cheeses as they are made. And for the adults in the group, check out the local cheese and wine tours at the Blue Heron Cheese and Wine Company. Once you have filled your belly, load up on Oregon history at the Pioneer museum, the Tillamook Air Museum, or take the Secret Island Fishing Charter out for an afternoon of catching tuna.
